BretSpec (“the app”) helps you identify vehicles from photos, track your progress toward finding rare cars, and (optionally) share that activity with friends you choose to connect with. This policy explains what data the app collects, why, and how you can delete it.
| Data | What it is | Why we collect it |
|---|---|---|
| Account info | Email address, or your Google/Apple account identifier, used to sign you in | Authentication |
| Display alias | A name you choose, shown to your friends instead of your email | Lets friends identify you without exposing your email |
| Vehicle scans (local) | Full-resolution photos, AI analysis results, and any personal notes you add | Core app feature — your vehicle history, kept on your device |
| Vehicle scans (cloud) | A record of each scan — manufacturer, model, year, vehicle type, country of origin, manufacture dates, regions sold, powertrain, estimated value, the AI-generated narrative, whether it matched a rare car, a small (~256px) thumbnail, and a larger (~768px) image of the photo | Powers the friend activity feed (including the tap-in detail view) and your friend-visible profile summary (vehicle count, rare cars found) |
| Friend graph | Which other users you’ve connected with, and any per-friend notification preferences you set | Lets you see friends’ activity and control who can notify you |
| Push notification token | A device-specific identifier issued by Apple/Google’s push services | Delivers notifications when a friend you’ve opted in to logs a new vehicle |
Full-resolution photos and personal notes never leave your device. The scan record described above — metadata, the AI-generated narrative, a small thumbnail, and a larger (~768px, not full-resolution) image — is stored on our servers, and only becomes visible to another user once you’ve added them as a friend. Your personal notes are always kept on your device and are never shared.
Vehicle identification (AI analysis): when you scan a vehicle, the photo is sent to our backend, which forwards it to Google’s Gemini AI to identify the vehicle. This happens for every scan, whether or not you have any friends. The image is used only to generate the analysis and is not retained by us beyond the request; see Google’s own privacy policy for how Gemini API requests are handled on their end.
License plates: vehicle photos, their thumbnails, and the larger shared image routinely capture visible license plates or other identifying details of third-party vehicles incidental to the scan. We do not blur or redact this information. These images are only reachable by users you’ve added as a friend (see §3).
We do not collect precise location tied to your identity for advertising purposes, contacts, or any data beyond what’s listed above. We do not sell your data.
Cloud-stored scan records, thumbnails, your friend graph, and push tokens are kept until you delete them (per-scan deletion) or delete your account. Deleting your account permanently removes:
Account deletion is processed automatically and is typically complete within a few minutes, though the confirmation shown in the app may appear before server-side cleanup finishes.
Push notifications are opt-in, per friend — enabling a notification for a friend is the only way we request notification permission from your device, and we don’t ask before you’ve taken that action. You can disable notifications for any friend at any time, and removing a friend clears notifications in both directions automatically.
If you believe a friend’s alias or content is inappropriate, use the Report action on that friend in the Friends screen, which opens an email to our support address with their identifier included. Removing a friend immediately and permanently revokes their visibility into your activity — since friendship requires a private invite code, a removed user cannot reconnect with you unless you choose to share a new code with them.
BretSpec is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect data from children under 13.
We’ll update this document as the app changes and update the “Last updated” date above.
